7 Actionable Ways to Protect your Braids from Damage

by Abdullah Mohamed 03 Feb 2022

Braids make a great fashion statement, after all, they completely change the look of your face. It is definitely a fancy way to spruce up your hairstyle. Braids are completely safe to put on and help maintain the good health of your hair even in unfavorable climatic conditions.

Although braids need proper care they don’t affect the texture of your hair and scalp. However, you need to maintain them in the right way for their long-term sustenance.

Now, let’s have a look at simple and basic hacks that make taking good care of your human hair braids easy and effortless:

1. Wash Your Braids Every Week

Even for your natural hair, you wash them twice or thrice a week to keep them shiny and properly nourished. The same would apply to your braids too. Because it is a fact that braids collect dirt, dust, and sweat and you’d obviously not want to bother others with a stinky smell.

So, it is a best practice to wash your braids with shampoo and water as you wash your natural hair. In addition, you can even dry wash your hair using a clean cloth, water, and shampoo to prevent hair damage. Section your braids and dry rub the scalp with a damp cloth gently.

2. Moisturize Your Scalp Regularly

The only hair care step that helps you control the dryness of your hair and scalp is how effectively you moisturize it. The more consistently you moisturize your hair, the more it keeps your head in a healthy condition.

Usually, dryness in your hair stems from eczema, and in such extreme conditions, your skin may go through bleeding or weeping. There could be other reasons as well including - dehydration, weather changes, and daily hair wash. Some visible signs of a dry scalp consist of - dandruff, soreness, and itchiness.

You can easily do away with these problems if you moisturize your hair on a regular basis. It does not mean that if you’re wearing braids, you can quit moisturizing. For maximum health, your hair roots need ample moisture. So, spray some water on your hair and lock the moisture with shea butter.

Other things that people try include - coconut oil, tea tree oil, canola oil, green tea, or apple cider vinegar. As a beginner, you can start with essential oils or moisturizing shampoo.

3. Don't Keep Your  Braids Tied Up All The Time

Keeping your braids too tight all day can affect the integrity of your hair edges. As braids are a protective hairstyle, they would strengthen your hair and keep them healthy and intact. So, the best approach would be to keep trying out several hairstyles but not at the cost of pulling your hair while styling.

4. Use Natural Moisturizing Products

Always remember the products you use on your hair can lead to breakage or help prevent it. No wonder, you may have heard a lot about the benefits of mineral oil and you might want to use them to keep your manes fully nourished. But, avoid braid moisturizers that have mineral oil in them.

Rather than mineral oils, you can go for natural oils like coconut oil or almond oil. To give a non-greasy texture to your hair, opt for a natural leave-in conditioner.

5. Don't Put Your Braids On For Too Long

Most women commit the sin of wearing braids in the morning and then totally forget about removing them. No wonder, it’s a protective style but you don’t have to wear them for too long, particularly when you don’t wish to go bald.

So, for the sake of scalp’s hygiene, don’t keep your braids on for more than 8 weeks. Although you can wear them for 6 weeks which is an ideal period. Whether it's a crochet braid, dread braid twists, or Bantu knots, keeping them on for several months can result in hair breakage which you don’t want at all.

6. Keep At Your Nighttime Hair Regime

The one awesome habit that you must keep is to wrap your braids at night when it’s the time to go to bed. You can use a silk scarf to protect the edges of your hair and prevent the roots from drying out. It indeed keeps your hair looking fresh and fully maintained.

7. Be Gentle

You might be tempted to rub your scalp once you’re done washing it. But, this does you more harm so go gentle with your hair. Dry your braids properly by squeezing out the water. As you massage your scalp with nutritious hair food, be sure to keep the roots fully moisturized.

Undoubtedly, braids are a part of different cultures and they always stay in trend. So, flaunt them in style but also take good care of them to keep their sustenance for a longer time. You can easily find a variety of braids online but if you’d explore our collection of braids, you’d be tempted to buy the one for yourself. Hope you enjoy scrolling through our product range.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
